LOS ANGELES, October 3, 2017 – The Hillsides Guild, a support group of Hillsides, is celebrating 30 years of helping children in foster care.
The Guild was established in 1987 by a group of Hillsides supporters who wanted to provide the children in Hillsides’ residential program with activities and holiday presents. Over the years, the Guild has run a summer carnival for the children, organized a yearly scavenger hunt, and provided children with bowling parties and holiday-themed gift baskets. It also raises money for Hillsides during two annual fundraisers, the holiday celebration held at the Parkway Grill in Pasadena and “A Day at the Races” event each spring at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia.
In addition, the Guild has supported all three of Hillsides’ capital improvement projects. All total, over the last 30 years, the Guild has raised approximately $672,000 for Hillsides. The Guild also started Hillsides annual gala, which today is the charity’s biggest fundraiser, raising up to $500,000 for Hillsides.
“The Guild’s only motivation throughout the years has been to improve the lives of the children, and they have made a huge difference,” said Hillsides President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph M. Costa during a 25th anniversary dinner for the Guild. “I have been involved with many support groups throughout my years in the child welfare industry, and this group is one of the most effective ones I have seen.”
The Guild anniversary dinner, held at the Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena, was attended by several past Guild presidents that included Sally Clark, JeanEtte Hyatt, Barbara Robison, Dee Fisher, Lyn Spector, Maureen Staley, and Donna De Mond. Current president Cathy Brennan also attended. Brennan, perhaps voicing a sentiment shared by many Guild members, said that the most meaningful part of the Guild’s work is “seeing the smiles on the children’s faces.”
